              astonished (adj.): filled with amazement; greatly surprised. (P. 8, page 125)
              cede (v.): allow someone else to have or own something; give up one’s rights in; surrender formally.

              ripe (adj.): fully grown or developed; specif., ready to be harvested and used for food, as grain
