other sections. You may not know that “psychology”
begins with “p”, so you could start looking for it
under “s”. After not being able to find it the e,
try thinking of related words, like “psychic” or
“psychosis”. That will lead you to look under “p”.
                  • Remember that there are some words that are
spelled very differently, but have the same
pronunciation. “Thrown” and “throne” is one
example. Their spelling is different and they mean
different things. So, be sure you’ve found the
                      correct word.

                  Read the guide words
At the top of the page are two words that help you
find the wo d you’re looking for. The word on the left
indicates the first entry on the page and the one on the
                  right is the last entry.

                  • If you were looking up the word “bramble” you
would start by going to the "B" section. You would
flip th ough, looking at the guide words at the top
of the pages until you found the page with "braid
bread". You will find “b amble” on this page because
it starts with “b-r-a” and that appears
between the two guide words. skim
                                                                       Glossary on
                                                                       page 86
Scan down the page for your word.
In order to find the wo d “busker”, you would skim past
“bubble” and “bunting” and “burn”. Since “busker”
begins with “b-u-s”, go past all the “b-u-b” and all the
“b-u-n” words until you reach the words beginning with
“b-u-s”. In this case, pass by “bush” and “business” and
this is where you will find “bus er”.
