                Read the definitio
When you’ve found the word you’re looking for, the
entry will give you its meaning. If the word has more
than one meaning, the most commonly used one will be
listed first The entry also gives the word’s pronunciation,
shows if it is capitalized (for proper nouns), indicates
what part of speech it is, and so on.

Finding the right meaning of an English word
You will often find th t a new English word you are
looking up has more than one meaning. In order to find
out which one is correct, try these tips:

                • First, keep in mind the context of the word you’re
looking for. Read through all the meanings and
decide which one makes the most sense given the
context in which you found the word. You will often
find similarities in the di ferent meanings, and that
should give you a good sense of what the
                   word means.
                • Second, after thinking about what the word means in
your own language look the word up in a bilingual
dictionary. You can be satisfied you understand the
word’s meaning if one of the English translations is
the word you were originally looking for.
