earth’s hard coal until the year 2050 or 2100; soft-coal
mines will produce until 2200 or 2300. During that time,
both hard and soft coal will have become more and more
costly. Water-powered electricity will have been found to be
much cheaper.Water-motors and spinning dynamoswill be
placed at every river or creek with any suitable fall tomake
electricity. Waves and tides washing in will constantly
fill various eservoirs along the seacoast. The water will
continually fall from them over revolving wheels. So, all of
earth’s flowing w ter, fresh or salt, will bechanneled in the
same way that Niagara is today: producing electricity for
heat, light and fuel.
Telephones connect the world. Wireless telephone and
telegraph circuits will circle the globe. A husband sailing
in the middle of the ocean will be able to speak with his wife
while she’s sitting in her bedroom in Austin. A telephone call
to China will be as easy as how we now call Manhattan from
Brooklyn. Using an automated signal, calls will connect to
any circuit in their system without having to go through an
operator.
Oranges will be grown in New York. Fast-moving refrigerated
vehicles on land and sea will deliver in-season produce
from the tropical and southern temperate zones within
days. Thus, we will have fresh summer foods that we cannot
grow in winter thanks to farmers in South America, South
Africa, Australia and the South Sea Islands. Their seasons
are directly opposite to ours. Scientists will have found a
way to cultivate many fruits currently restricted to climates
much hotter or colder than ours. Delicious oranges will be
grown in the suburbs of New York. Summer fruits, such as
cantaloupes, will be engineered to be as robust as potatoes,
and will be stored through the winter in the same way.
