Some fun facts about... English
1. William Shakespeare's name has been spelled many
different ways over time. His name has been spelled
with over 80 variations by his contemporaries,
including “Shappere” and “Shaxberd”. There are
very few signatures that have survived, but the Bard
never signed his name “William Shakespeare,”
instead, he used modific tions or abbreviations
like “WillmShakp,” “WillmShakspere” and “William
Shakspeare”. Shakespeare, no matter the spelling,
is most likely derived from the Old English words
“schakken” (“to brandish”) and “speer”
(“spear”), and possibly indicated an schakken
(v.): blandir
aggressive or combative person.
