2. There are nine different ways to pronounce the
English letter combination "ough". This next
sentence incorporates them all: "A rough-coated,
dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through
the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a
slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."
3. On Tangier Island in Virginia, a unique English
dialect is spoken. Even native English speakers
aren’t able to understand it; it is said to be nearly
the same as the language used when the island was
colonized in 1686.
4. About every 98 minutes, someone creates a new
word in the English language, as reported by Global
Language Monitor (GLM).
As stated in the Oxford English Dictionary, the number
of words in the English language is between one and
two million. It probably contains the most words of
all languages.
