Activity 27
• This activity promotes talking
about the poem while using
comparatives. If the poems
the students are working with
have plenty of comparatives
and superlatives, you could use
them to reflect upon how
they’re used.
• Tell them to add -er to T
adjectives with one or two
syllables or the word more to rack 17
longer adjectives when making
comparisons. Add -est to short
adjectives, or the word most
with longer adjectives when
using superlatives.
• Although comparatives are
usually thought of as more/-er
than..., remind your students that
they can compare things in a
negative way by using ‘-less’
or antonyms.
• Make sure students use
adjectives when expressing
their impressions about what the
poem means. Use the sentences
they wrote to show how and
where they can include them.
